Four injured in Monday crash

December 18, 2008

A two-vehicle crash sent four Lincoln County residents to hospitals in Danville and Lexington on Monday in the hours just before a winter storm hit the area. Shoppers were out in Danville readying for the storm and Christmas shopping just after dark. There is no indication that the cold rain that had just begun contributed to the accident.

Frankie Thompson, 12, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington where her condition remained unknown at press time.

The collision occurred at 5:54 p.m. about 30 yards south of the intersection of U.S. 127 and Cassady Connector Avenue, near Popplewell Lane, according to Danville Assistant Police Chief Tony Gray. Traffic flow was not restored until about 7:40 p.m.

Police said a white 1994 Jeep Cherokee driven by Justin Hager, 18, of Stanford was traveling north on U.S. 127, passing vehicles by moving into the center lane. He reportedly drifted into the southbound lane and into oncoming traffic.

Police say Hager struck a red 1993 Plymouth Voyager driven by Sheila Pike, 41, of Hustonville, who was traveling with two passengers, her daughters Frankie Thompson, 12, and Amanda Thompson, 5.

All four involved had to be extricated from their vehicles, said Deputy Boyle County Fire Chief Woody Ball.

Hager was transported to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center where he was treated for facial injuries, as well as leg and abdominal pain.

Pike and Amanda Thompson were also taken to McDowell, where Pike was treated for a possible broken pelvis. She was later transferred to UK.

Amanda, who suffered facial and internal injuries, was treated and released Monday night.

Frankie Thompson was airlifted from the Danville-Boyle County Airport to UK, where she was in surgery Tuesday morning. Danville police officers Chris Matano and Detective Kevin Peel are continuing the investigation.
