Danville fire hydrants to be tested

December 19, 2008

Danville Fire Department and Danville Water Department will conduct a series of hydrant flow tests for a water system calibration model from 10 p.m. today until 4 a.m. Saturday.

Areas outlined in the tests are:

Alta Avenue from Stanford Road to East Main Street.

Main Street from Maple Avenue to Third Street.

Maple Avenue from Main Street to Rosemont Avenue.

Perryville Road from Locklin Lane to Hays Lane.

Residents in these areas or adjacent areas are advised that the testing could potentially affect water pressure and cause water cloudiness.

Water discoloration also may occur as a result of iron deposits being disturbed during the flushing process. Iron deposits can build up inside pressure tanks, water heaters and water pipes. It occasionally breaks loose, causing rusty water when faucets are first opened. This happens especially when city or household water lines are disturbed and rust breaks loose from old pipes.

Customers are advised to check for signs of discoloration prior to doing laundry. If the water is discolored, let it run until it clears before doing laundry. Usually this takes less than five minutes. If laundry appears stained, keep the articles wet and rewash them using a rust- removing compound. Do not use bleach on stained laundry, as it will set the stain.
