Prep Basketball round-up: Lincoln girls and Boyle boys win

December 24, 2008

Jessica Upchurch and Keira Henderson each scored 16 points to lead Lincoln County to a 58-28 victory over Owensboro Catholic Tuesday in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic.

"We got off to a slow start, but then we picked it up offensively and started shooting well," said Lincoln coach Don Story. "Our defense also improved as the game went along and we got a very good win."

Lincoln trailed 14-8 after one period before outscoring Catholic 17-7 and 16-3 the next two periods.

The Patriots (8-2) were 23-for-48 from the field, a 47.9 percent mark, and 9-for-15 at the foul line. Owensboro Catholic was 8-for-35 from the field and 10-for-21 at the free throw line.

Lincoln outrebounded the losers 32-19 and forced Catholic into 26 turnovers while making 18 of their own. Lincoln had 14 assists and 18 steals.

Bowling Green 85, Boyle County 47 - At Caverna, the Rebels were no match for Bowling Green in the Caverna Holiday Tournament championship game.

"I am disappointed. We were not mentally in the game and were not ready to play," said Boyle coach David Christopher. "By far, the Bowling Green bench wore us out. We just did not play well enough to compete.

"We started competing in the second half, but by that time it was too late. We have to play four quarters. We are not good enough to just go through the motions as we did."

Kendra Ross led Boyle (5-2) with 16 points and Karlie Neal had 12.

BOYS

Boyle County 64, Scott (Tenn). 54 - At Stearns, Boyle rallied from a five-point halftime deficit with a 22-10 margin in the third quarter at the Arby's/KFC Classic at McCreary Central.

"It was our fourth game in four days and we did not play well the first half. In the second half, our defensive pressure wore them down. We were also able to play inside-out and hit some shots," Boyle coach Steve Adams said after his team's third straight win.

"We are just now getting in basketball shape. We not only had guys come out late from football, but we had players from soccer and cross country that got a late start, too."

Jordan Aumiller had 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field and 7-for-11 at the foul line and also pulled off 14 rebounds to help the Rebels win that battle 32-24.

"Jordan had another good game and is starting not to worry about his arm. And he's just getting into basketball shape. This tournament was good for him, and Rees (MacShara), because they had to be the two players whose bodies were the most beat up coming out of football. Now you can see better things happening for them and other players," Adams said.

Corey Jones was 5-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-7 from 3-point range, and had 14 points while Hunter Glasscock had 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

"We needed to have some success and see that we were making progress. Today we were just trying to get through a rough grind, but we hung in and got our third straight win and that should help us," Adams said.

Boyle had 14 turnovers and Scott 12.

Mercer County 56, Warren East 28 - The Titans held Warren East to five total points in the second and third quarters at the Citizen's First Holiday Classic in Bowling Green.

"We played good defense and good off to a good start," Mercer assistant coach Spencer Tatum said. "We were able to stretch our lead and play some younger kids in the fourth quarter, which is always a positive thing."

Ward Dedman led Mercer with 14 points while Jamel Taylor had 12 and Clay Cinnamon 10.

Mercer 58, Hart County 49 - In their second game Tuesday - and fourth game in 24 hours at the tourney - the Titans used a 20-10 advantage in the third quarter to hold off Hart County.

"This was a grinder game," Tatum said. "Both teams were fatigued and you could tell by the way the game was played. We picked it up in the third quarter and made 11 of 16 free throws down the stretch to win."

Mercer (4-5) got 16 points from Dedman and 13 from Nick Patterson.
