Lincoln soldier awarded Bronze Star

December 28, 2008

STANFORD - A Lincoln County soldier has been awarded the Bronze Star with Valor.

President Bush awarded the honor earlier this month to Army Specialist Bennie W. Smith for exceptionally valorous and heroic conduct during an explosively formed projectile attack in March in Iraq.

"Specialist Smith's courage in the face of an imminent threat, immediate reaction and unwavering resolve saved the lives of two soldiers. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, the Multi-national Corps-Iraq, and the United States Army," the citation reads.

Smith is the son of Marvin and Willie Sue Smith and Linda and Billy Burwell, and grandson of Wayne and Helena Smith and Bennie and Louada Smith.
