Two charged with burglary

Police recovered $2,000 in stolen property from an early morning burglary spree after a victim recognized a suspect's Chicago Bulls jacket.

Police charged 21-year-old Ridge D. Wilson of Mount Sterling, and 19-year-old Travis Fulz of 111 Magnolia St. for a string of burglaries around College Street, Fox Alley and Burns Avenue Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, Winchester Police Detective Danny Thomas said.

The department had been receiving reports throughout the night of burglaries occurring, he said, including a pair of garages.

The pair were located after they allegedly broke into a home and garage at 220 Boone Ave. around 2 a.m. Wednesday by kicking in the door, which awakened the resident, Thomas said. The woman grabbed a baseball bat for self defense and went to investigate, but saw two men walking out of her house and called 911, he said. She also gave police a description of a jacket one of the suspects was wearing.

Officers quickly took the two into custody, but in interviews with police, they denied involvement.

Thomas said dispatchers had been receiving calls all night about vehicles being broken into, along with a couple of garages.

"Both subjects had been drinking and didn't want to cooperate," Thomas said. "They always had a good excuse, an alibi and everything."

During the investigation, officers learned where the stolen property may be and recovered everything from a residence on Lexington Avenue, including a video camera that had already been sold, he said.

After that, one of the suspects took officers to all the sites where the burglaries took place, he said.

The two were each charged with one count of second-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary and six counts of theft by unlawful taking.

Officers recovered computers, radar detectors, car stereos, satellite radios, cell phones, amplifiers and cash apparently taken during the burglaries, he said.

"It was a big bust," Thomas said. "We also found a stolen DVD player from another case."

Other arrests may be pending, Thomas said, and he praised the officers for their quick response. Anyone who was a victim of a burglary in that area should call the Winchester Police Department at 745-7400.
