The George Rogers Clark boys basketball team will kick off a historical week Saturday by hosting the Central Bank Classic.

The Cards will take on Lexington Christian in a single-game format beginning at 3 p.m. and will pay tribute to Christine Gay.

Gay will receive the annual Martin Luther King Lifetime Achievement Award. Martin Luther King Day is Monday and president-elect Barack Obama will be sworn into office on Tuesday.

Throughout her life, Gay, who considers herself a "proud citizen of Winchester," has been active in all circles of the community.

Gay is a member of the Broadway Baptist Church and was an influential figure in the development of Heritage Park.

She also is a "proud" supporter of George Rogers Clark basketball and Little League baseball.

Gay has a simple motto that we all should follow: "If I don't help someone along the way, my life will be truly in vain."

The Winchester Sun will also honor a Player of the Game.

Zollo selected

Clark sophomore Vinny Zollo, who has committed to play basketball at the University of Kentucky, has been identified as an elite player by USA Basketball.

Zollo, who will graduate in 2011, is being considered to become a member of the 2009-10 developmental national team.

Williams part of final roster

Clark senior Ryan Williams is on the final roster and will compete in the annual "Border Bowl" Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg.

Kentucky will take on Tennessee in the second edition of the bowl, which was created after the summer classic between the two states folded two years ago.

Grashel to play in "Down Under"

Clark senior football player Adam Grashel has been invited to compete in the "Down Under Bowl" in Australia.

The international event will be held in June. Players from the United States will compete against players from other countries in the 11 to 12-day trip.
