Letter: State fire department museum is needed

January 20, 2009

Dear Editor,

As a charter member of the Hayes Crossing/Haldeman Volunteer Fire Department, I would like to make a suggestion that would involve all 120 county and city fire departments in the state of Kentucky.

I feel like it's time to establish a Kentucky fire department museum. Contributions of fire department history could come from every fire department in Kentucky, since we have several hundred fire departments in Kentucky.

An old tobacco warehouse not being used would make a very suitable place to display trucks and equipment. This could be an ideal situation, since we have many warehouses around the state.

If possible, the state fire marshal's office and the legislature could explore the potential for such a project. It would bring very positive publicity to the state of Kentucky. Volunteer and paid fire departments have contributed to the history of this state, and we need to preserve it if at all possible.

Anyone interested in being a part of this project can contact me, Lloyd Dean in Morehead, Ky., at (606) 748-9145.
