UK Basketball: Miller shows promise

It's no big secret Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson have been carrying the load for Kentucky this season. It's expected of them and a routine habit.

Meeks and Patrick Patterson combined for 45 points in the Wildcats' 85-80 loss at Ole Miss Tuesday night, while the rest of the starting cast featuring Perry Stevenson, Ramon Harris and Michael Porter combined for 13 points.

Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie has been known to tweak his starting lineup and juggle the players off the bench according to individual performances in closed door practice sessions. Despite the loss to the Rebels, the team's first loss in the Southeastern Conference, Gillispie's starting lineup featuring Meeks, Patterson, Harris, Porter and Stevenson is 9-3. That could be one of the many reasons Gillispie hasn't messed with the team's first five.

Despite the team's success, a consistent third scorer has yet to arrive, but following the setback to Ole Miss, a couple of candidates could be in line to help take the pressure off Patterson and Meeks.

Stevenson has shown signs of taking over the role, but has been inconsistent. Stevenson scored just seven points in 34 minutes against the Rebels.

A pair of freshmen gave the Cats a big lift off the bench Tuesday night, including former Mason County standout Darius Miller, who scored 12 points off the bench. Miller's final tally was the most since scoring 13 in a win over Delaware State two months ago.

Miller connected on two shots from long range for the first time in his career and just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds and five assists.

In addition to Miller's performance, freshman DeAndre Liggins also gave Kentucky a spark with eight points and four assists.

Overall, Kentucky's bench accounted for 22 points, which will likely pay dividends leading up to the final two months of the season.

Although finding the third scorer is still a mystery, Miller could develop into a key player in the last two months of the season.
