Curator launches new art club for high school students

Opera House Gallery curator Tessa Hetrick has a goal: share her love of art with Winchester, especially its children and teens. In order to accomplish that goal, Hetrick is launching an art club open to all George Rogers Clark High School students.

"Of course, I'd like for it to evolve into anybody in the community. But right now we're starting with the high school, creating an artistic venue for the students," she said.

"This isn't just about drawing behind closed doors. This is about showing our work to the public. This is to teach ourselves and learn how to market our artwork. My whole thing is this is a time when the value of art needs to be seen," Hetrick said.

The club's first meeting will be at the gallery Saturday at noon. No prior art experience is necessary. In fact, Hetrick said she hopes students from all sorts of backgrounds can attend the meeting.

"This is open to anybody who loves art. You know, math students, science students. When you start pulling people in from other areas, that's when art becomes fascinating. ... Anybody who appreciates art or wants to join," Hetrick said.

Participants can look forward to learning from some of the best artists in the area, and even go on a few field trips.

"I'll have guest artists, like Lexington artists, to teach a class to them. We will be visiting galleries in Lexington and Mount

Sterling. ... We'll participate in community projects," Hetrick said.

The community projects are particularly important to her because she is hopeful that club membership will inspire students to get involved in other areas of the community.

"I think this is important because I think getting involved in the community is important and I think it's important because it builds character, it challenges you creatively and on a personal level. It's only positive."
