February 10, 2009

STANFORD - A petition drive led by PBK Bank President Bruce Edgington opposing the proposed Stanford annexation near Food Lion on U.S. 150 generated 85 signatures before being turned into Lincoln County Clerk Sonny Spoonamore by 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Kathy Grubbs, with the clerk's office, counted the signatures but noted they were not verified.

In order for the annexation issue to be sent to the November 2010 ballot, the petition required the signature of 50 percent of the residents living in the target annexation area.

A Stanford City Council study previously stated there area had a residential population of roughly 300 people.

Messages for Stanford Mayor Bill Miracle were not immediately returned this morning.
