Letter: Perryville fire chief thanks everyone

February 23, 2009

Dear Editor,

As Perryville fire chief, I would like to take a few moments to thank the following for their help and assistance during the recent ice storm:

The men and women of Perryville City and Boyle County Fire Department Station 2 worked countless hours for both the citizens of Perryville and the county residents in western Boyle County. With tree and limb removal in both the city and county, first responses to medical calls, fire calls, welfare checks on those who could not or chose not to leave, or delivering supplies to citizens in need - they spent days away from their families and their jobs. They slept on couches or the floor at the fire station or in a cold house to ensure that the citizens of the community had adequate and immediate fire and first response medical coverage during this trying time.

Thank you for operating the City of Perryville's backhoe and handling the burn operation for Perryville at the quarry. Please pass my thanks along to your families as well for allowing you to help others in need. Too often, volunteer firefighters do not get the thanks they deserve. Please know that I and the citizens appreciate their sacrifices.

Thanks for the food donations for our crews. It was nice to have hot meals from the Marathon Station and Christian Church in Perryville.

The firefighters and rescue workers from Faubush, Science Hill, Woodstock, Bronston, Mt. Victory, Shopville, White Lily and the Rescue Squad in Pulaski County, gave their time to travel to our city and county to remove limbs and trees to make the roads safe for us. Hopefully, one day we may be able to return the favor.

Even though they don't always hear it, I appreciate all the sacrifices given by our staff and all they do for our community.
