February 26, 2009|HAL MORRIS

Evan Hester wants to see how he measures up against the big boys.

So the Danville senior will head to Eastern Kentucky next season as a preferred walk-on for the Colonels.

"I kind of wanted to start big, and if I don't like it I could work my way down," Hester said. "Eastern fit me, it's not too big and it's not too small. And, I know people up there."

Hester said he'd been talking to Eastern throughout the season, and made a visit to Richmond last month.

"Coach (John) Revere came down and we kind of sat around and talked and we set up a visiting day," Hester said. "And I went up there and visited the campus and walked around. And I just liked it a a lot."

Hester had a sensational senior season for the Admirals.

He earned All-Area honors as both an offensive lineman and defensive end. On defense, he registered 53 tackles, with 10 for losses, and had 3.5 sacks.

He was recruited to Eastern as a defensive end, and said he would like to get there weighing between 235 and 240 pounds. He played at 230 pounds last season, and wrestled at 215 pounds, where he placed seventh in the state last weekend.

Aside from football, Hester said Eastern has the interpreting major he thinks he wants as well. He wants to be a deaf interpreter, and said both of his grandparents are deaf and that his aunt is a deaf interpreter.

Now Hester is ready to hit the weights and get ready for the rigors of college football

"I'm just going to go out there and see what I can do against the bigger guys," he said.
