Last year: The Lady Cardinals went 28-14 and advanced to the state tournament for the second time in three years. Clark lost to Montgomery County 9-3 in the 40th District finals, but dealt the Lady Indians a 4-3 loss in 10 innings to capture the 10th Region championship.

Players lost: Catcher Amanda Wheeler and first baseman Betsy Harp.

Top returnees: Caitlin Collins, Michelle Ladanyi, Ali Martin, Morgan Woosley, Kelsey Mitchell, Kayla Jones, Shamy Williams, Kelsey May, Amy Haggard and Megan Bealert. Mitchell and Ladanyi are the team's two seniors.

Outlook: Coach Jackie McCloud lost two players from last year's regional championship team, but returns a solid nucleus of returnees, including seniors Ladanyi and Mitchell. "I like this team," McCloud said. "This team is a young team. We need good leadership and we're asking (Mitchell and Ladanyi) to be our leaders." Haggard and Woosley will split time on the mound. McCloud said pitching and hitting will be the team's top strengths.

Top priority: "Our goal is to win the region and get to the state tournament and that's what we're going to try to do," McCloud said. "Just getting there is not the thing. Last year we got there, but we didn't do real well when we got there. This year we want to try to make a little noise. That's our goal. We feel like it's going to be a good year."

Weaknesses: While hitting is one of the team's bright spots, McCloud said defense is an area of concern heading into the season. "When we do make plays, we just have to (finish) them," he said. "We can't make errors. We've got to make them and go. I feel like they'll work on that."
