Calvary Christian March Madness

Calvary Christian School created its own version of "March Madness" last month, as they challenged the school's 200 students to read 250,000 pages in just 26 days.

Highlights of the tailgate party included hotdogs, chips and treats; school Principal Ned Hess kissing a pig; MVP Top Readers Awards being given out in each classroom; and varsity basketball players, cheerleaders and the cardinal mascot from George Rogers Clark High School putting on an exhibition in the gym.

Local Centre College student pledges fraternity

DANVILLE - Carmack Kersey of Winchester, a freshman at Centre College, is part of the 2008-2009 pledge class of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

"Service is one of the foundational principles of the Greek chapters here at Centre," said Patrick Noltemeyer, director of volunteer services.

Fraternity and sorority members' service activities benefit philanthropic organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the American Red Cross, St. Jude Children's Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and the Boyle County Humane Society.

According to Noltemeyer, the tradition of service through Greek organizations is meant to cultivate a lifelong commitment to serving others that extends beyond the students' experiences at Centre.

In addition, both Greek and independent Centre students participate in service through Centre Action Reaches Everyone (CARE), the College's campus-wide service organization.

Kersey is the son of Carmack and Cathey Kersey of Winchester, and is a graduate of Lexington Catholic High School.
