Letter: UK basketball isn't the 'court jester'

April 09, 2009

Dear Editor,

How disappointing that Herb Brock felt it necessary to write such a mean-spirited piece on the state of Kentucky basketball and the hiring of John Calipari. I certainly agree that Kentucky basketball has had its share of miscues in its long history, but I am optimistic that the school and those who are entrusted with leading its programs have learned some vital lessons from past mistakes.

At least I am willing, at this very early stage of the hiring of John Calipari, to give him and the university a chance to prove themselves. I am also willing to believe that enough safeguards are in place to protect the program and the university.

I do not think the University of Kentucky's basketball situation is laughable or that the program is "the court jester of college basketball." What a jaded and negative opinion of a program that is so recognized and acknowledged for its many contributions to the success and lore of the game.

Yes, we have stumbled at times, but to condemn the program as laughable is to paint with a rather large, disgruntled(?) brush. Also, closing with an unnecessary jab at Rick Pitino was petty. Let's all expect that both the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky will show all of the basketball fans of the state that winning teams can have stellar programs in every aspect.
