Lincoln reviews three finalists for EM director

STANFORD - Lincoln County Fiscal Court met in executive session for more than 30 minutes Tuesday to discuss hiring a new Emergency Management director but took no action.

Judge-Executive Buckwheat Gilbert said three final candidates are being considered for the position, which has been vacant since Winford Todd was fired in February after the county's emergency plan fell apart during the ice storm.

The need for an emergency director was reinforced Friday when a tornado touched down in the Eubank, Waynesburg and Broughtontown areas. No one was reported injured, but several buildings were damaged, trees uprooted across roads and power knocked out.

An emergency shelter was opened Friday night at the South Lincoln Community Center at Kings Mountain, and eight people came to get Red Cross vouchers for motel rooms and clothing.

Gilbert said emergency crews performed well in the tornado's aftermath under the direction of interim director Troy Gingrass, who is one of the three finalists for the job.

Magistrate David Faulkner said the arrival of tornado season mandates that the county have an emergency director on the job but does not mean the process should be rushed.

"I think we're going about this the right way," Faulkner said. "All three candidates are local, and I feel good about the qualifications of all three."

Gilbert said he will interview the three finalists and expects that a new director will be announced at Fiscal Court's April 28 meeting.
