Out 'N About: One last chance for grandson's turkey

May 03, 2009|BUD BARNARD

C.J. doesn't have a turkey as yet, but we were going to try once more on Friday. My grandson didn't have to go to school and I didn't have to work, so we planned to sojourn back into the woods again for at least one more try.

I fared a little better in the calling department when I was hunting. I hunted alone on one weekday alone and had a hen and a gobbler come into the far end of the grass field.

The hen wandered all over the field trying to find something to eat, but the gobbler just stayed at the extreme other end of the field and strutted and gobbled. I could not get him to venture anywhere near shotgun range, and these two turkeys finally just moseyed out of sight.

There was another turkey gobbling off to my left rear at the same time, but I never saw that bird. I think he saw my utility terrain vehicle and decided that wasn't where he needed to be and departed the area.

As for me, I have filled my tag. It didn't happen the way I envisioned, but there is some jake turkey meat in the freezer. The season has been a success for me, and some good eating is in the future at our house.

In need of recipes

I am going to have to glean some different recipes from some of my friends to prepare the meat, though. Just plain deep-frying the meat doesn't seem to really get the juices flowing in my taste buds. I want to try something exotic.

I have talked to some of my friends about their ways of preparing the meat, but I can't remember just what they told me so I will have to go back to them and ask them again.

So far, I have enjoyed the UTV. It is a really easy, safe way to go up and down the hills in the woods I hunt. It seems like there is almost no place I can't go with it.

It will certainly extend my time to be able to hunt, and because of the added safety, I will no longer be so apprehensive about hunting alone in this area. I was always a little leery about the all-terrain vehicle when I was riding by myself.

My only limitation will be my health. I will have to take better care of myself in the future. I won't be able to chow down on the doughnuts like John Calipari does. I'm too fat already, and those doughnuts would just be adding fuel to the fire.

I have a foot problem now, so walking any distance is out of the question, but I can still mash that gas pedal.

I have no plans to keep the UTV for a great number of years. The cost of owning it would be too great. However, barring losing my job, I do plan on keeping it however long I can maintain an interest in hunting and maybe using it to get to that secret hidey-hole.

At my age, and with my health not being too great, that may not be too many years, but for the time being I am going to enjoy it to its fullest.

C.J. already wants me to let him drive the UTV. So far he just gets to sit in the seat. The accompanying photo shows that, but I might let him inch it around the yard. However, he has already been informed that the driving chores will be left up to me.
