Mobile mammography unit passes federal survey

The mobile mammography unit at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center successfully met all testing criteria established by the American College of Radiology Committee on Mammography Accreditation. The Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 is federal legislation enacted to ensure medical facilities performing mammograms meet strict nationwide standards.

The mobile mammography unit is inspected annually by the Food and Drug Administration to maintain its accreditation. During the recent inspection, federal inspectors reported 100 percent compliance for the unit. The inspection included the quality assurance program, personnel training and qualifications, physician credentials, equipment and processor maintenance and evaluation, educational programs, and performance improvement.

McDowell's mobile mammography unit travels throughout Boyle and surrounding counties, helping make it convenient for women to have a mammogram, a tool for identifying breast cancer in its earliest stages.

EMRMC's breast biopsy system gets accreditation

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center's stereotactic breast biopsy system was accredited by the American College of Radiology Committee on Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Accreditation of the Commission on Quality and Safety.

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of its practice. Accreditation ensures individuals undergoing stereotactic breast biopsy procedures are receiving quality services.

Evaluations for accreditation are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess qualifications of personnel and adequacy of facility equipment. Surveyors report findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
