Winchester to launch first cell phone audio tours in Kentucky

May 06, 2009|Sun staff report

Starting this week, local history will only be one cell phone call away.

On Friday, Winchester will open the state's first cell phone tour to kick off National Tourism Week and Historic Preservation Month. Kentucky's First Lady Jane Beshear will ring in the program at 10 a.m. on Depot Street.

"This will truly give a voice to our historic buildings and sites," said Nancy Turner, director of the Winchester-Clark County Tourism Commission. "We are thrilled to offer this cutting- edge technology to our tourists and residents allowing them to access history at their own pace."

Structured into 25 prompts, the program offers a self-guided walking tour with information on historic buildings in downtown Winchester. Tours will be accessible 24-hours a day by calling (859) 592-1622.

Organizers said the system monitors calls to track when tours begin, how long they last and which stops are most popular. The Tourism Commission plans to add new cell phone tours to other local sites this year, including the Civil War Fort at Boonesboro.

The Tourism Commission partnered with Spatial Adventures, a cell phone tourism company, to implement the program.

Friday's kick-off is open to the public.
