Town and Country homemakers donate to the Special Olympics

Town and Country Homemakers met Tuesday, May 5, at the home of Sue Staton. Sue provided the meal using the Cinco de Mayo theme with a feast of Mexican food.

Those in attendance were Betty Bonar, Sandy Hiles, Deanna Wright, Denise Knoble, Shirley Nickell, Megan DeCapio Connie Harms, Mary Lou Shearer, Sue Staton and Billye Jean Stigall. Guests were Hilda Standafer, Betty Aldridge and Delores Segress.

Sue Staton read the inspiration, "God's Gift for Mothers," and gave a gift to the oldest grandmother, Betty Aldridge, and youngest mother, Megan DeCapio.

Delores Segress gave a presentation on gardening. She showed a pattern of the North American Indian Medicine Wheel Garden and spoke of creating one on the lawn of the Clark County Library. Delores said that she would like for the Homemaker Clubs of Clark County to participate with planting flowers and maintaining a portion of the wheel. She will meet with Jennifer Howard regarding getting all clubs involved in the project.

Betty Bonar called the meeting to order. Mary Lou Shearer gave the treasurer's report.

The club voted to donate to Special Olympics. Pennies were collected for Pennies for Friendship which go to ACWW (Associated County Women of the World) and each member donated $1 to reimburse the Clark County Homemakers Council for the club's total membership.

Megan DeCapio gave the lesson "Make It Safe and Keep It Safe." She shared information and tips on safe preparation of foods and keeping them safe from contamination and spoilage. She pointed out the importance of labels and the difference of â??use-by' and â??sell by' labels on foods at the grocery store. She presented each member with handouts regarding food safety.

Shirley Nickel reported that help is needed with the Summer Feeding Program. Betty Bonar reported that people are needed for the "Be A Book Buddy" program during the fall school year.

Club member Denise Knoble will host an art show May 16 at the Winchester Opera House at 6 p.m.

The May newsletter was discussed and the schedule for summer meetings was established. Members signed up for the Leader Lessons for the upcoming fall/winter meetings.

Officers for the 2009-2010 club meetings were elected as follows: Betty Bonar, president; Denise Knoble, vice president; Mary Lou Shearer, treasurer, and Megan DeCapio, secretary.

The next meeting will be June 1 at the Clark County Extension Office at 6:30 p.m.
