McDowell to host free pain seminar

June 01, 2009

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center will host a free seminar on chronic pain from 6:30-8 p.m June 11 in the Breckinridge room on the second floor of the Gilcher Building, behind the city parking garage.

Co-sponsored by Medtronic, the seminar will feature local experts who can provide general information on chronic pain and the latest in treatment options.

It is estimated that chronic pain results in about 40 million doctor visits and accounts for an estimated 515 million lost work days each year.

"We are pleased to be hosting this free event. Our effort is to provide information through education for people who are living with chronic pain and may not be receiving relief because of lack of information or common myths about treatment options," said Harry Nickens, spokesman for McDowell Health.

"As a leading facility providing care for those in our community living with chronic pain, we are hosting this event to share information and help patients find resources that can help."

Those attending the seminar may park on the fourth level of the parking garage.

During the seminar, Dr. Anjum Bux and Mike Helm, a certified physician assistant, will speak. Both are on the staff at the Pain Management Center at the hospital.

They will discuss some of the causes of chronic pain, the various treatment options available and how patients can take action to pursue appropriate treatment options. Treatment options may include physical therapy, medications or surgical options, including the use of medical devices that may provide pain relief for appropriate patients.
