Prep Baseball: Danville Ads rained out

June 04, 2009|MIKE MARSEE

The e-mail came as a complete surprise to Paul Morse.

The sun was shining and the Danville baseball coach was looking forward to his team's game Wednesday night when he got word that the game would have to wait.

Henry Clay officials made an early call to postponed the second game of Danville's semi-state series with Lexington Catholic at their school. The game was rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. today.

Parts of Lexington received about three-tenths of an inch of rain Wednesday morning, but the storm had long passed when Morse said he received the e-mail about 2 or 2:30 p.m. - more than five hours before game time.

However, by game time the rains began again, and it was still ranining this morning.

"They basically said, 'The field is unplayable; is it OK if we play Thursday and Friday at 7:30?'" Morse said.

Game 3 of the best-of-three series would be played Friday night if necessary. Lexington Catholic (25-8-3) leads the series 1-0 after its 10-0, five-inning win Monday, and Danville (27-12) would have to win two straight games to advance to next week's state quarterfinals at Applebee's Park in Lexington.

Kentucky High School Athletic Association specifications for postseason baseball sites require semi-state host schools to have a tarp that can cover all dirt areas on the infield, but Morse said he wasn't sure if the field was covered before rain fell on it Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

"Either they didn't put it on or they don't want to mess up their field," he said.

Morse said the Admirals have gotten used to rainouts in this inclement spring, but he said they're ready to play as soon as possible.

"This time of year, everybody wants to get out there and play," he said. "And our guys want a chance to prove they're better than how they played the other night."
