The Jessamine County Historical Society will host its ninth annual History Fest on June 25 through 27, celebrating 40 years of activity in Jessamine County.

The JCHS started the History Fest tradition, an event designed to attract previous residents of Jessamine County or people whose ancestors lived in Jessamine County into town to celebrate and swap stories, in 2001, said Ernestine Hamm, member of the historical society.

"They (members of the historical society) had been corresponding on the computer and realized they had a lot of family connection with people from out of state, so they devised this history fest to bring everyone together," she said.

In the past 40 years, the group, comprised of about 75 members, has participated in several historic landmark restoration projects and actively works with the local cemeteries to find graves of unknown Revolutionary War soldiers and make grave markers for them.

In 2002, Hamm said the group recreated the first Fourth of July, complete with members dressing in Revolutionary War period attire. The following year, the group volunteered time cleaning the Moravian Cemetery.

In 2005, out of state and Kentucky historical society members embroidered their family history on quilt squares and sent them into be combined into one quilt, which currently hangs on a wall in a wall in the historical society office.

For this year's project, will dedicate a 12th Revolutionary War grave marker, and the Historical Society will meet at the old Jessamine County Jail on Saturday, June 27, to learn more about the jail's history and honor the families of previous jailers.
