Pet perfect: Dog lovers show off at Boyle County Fair

June 21, 2009|SUSIE LAUN

Rocky Cash came to the Boyle County Fairgrounds on Saturday to give his dogs a little more attention.

Less than two weeks ago, Cash's daughter was born and he said his dogs have been neglected ever since.

He said when he was at the hospital he showed the doctors photos of his three boxers - Haven, Size and Beauty - saying they were his first kids.

Cash and his trio were among the pets and owners gathered Saturday morning at the fairgrounds to show off their pets as a part of the Boyle County Fair.

Pet owners could enter their dogs into 11 different categories, including pet in costume and pet tricks.

Many of this year's participants were first-timers, including Ronda Crutchfield and her 8-month-old puppy, Molly. Crutchfield said she decided to participate because "Molly is very special."

Molly was a Christmas present from Crutchfield's dad. "She's the best present I ever got," she said.

The show, sponsored by veterinarians Nash, Cleveland & Godfrey, is a fun event because it's informal, co-organizer Linda Conley said.

"I enjoy it because it's not a serious dog show," Conley said.

People can come to the pet show and enjoy themselves. She said that adults and children have a great time.

Amy Rowland heard about the competition from a friend and said she decided to come because she knew her dogs were cute.

Rowland owns two Chihuahuas, Isabel and Abby. The night before the show, Rowland prepared by painting her dogs' toe nails. For the costume category they were dressed as "pretty princesses."

Cash, along with his dog, Haven, won the Pet-Master Look-a-like competition.

"She's been my best friend for a couple of years," he said.
