Custom Made to play at Ryman

July 03, 2009|By Rachel Parsons

Local bluegrass band Custom Made is about to join the ranks of legendary performers like Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs and Dan Tyminski of "O Brother Where Art Thou" fame. The newly formed band has been chosen to play at the Ryman Auditorium, former home of the Grand Ole Opry, on July 9.

"Every summer, they have a concert series called Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman," said band member Van Ramey. "You have to send in a demo, and ours was chosen. It's based on the original songs we wrote. Every song on our CD "New Standards" we wrote."

The CD will be available for purchase at www.cdbaby.com starting July 9, but Ramey said that if things go well, the Ryman performance could lead to a recording contract with a major label.

"It's a showcase for bands. Promoters and record labels are there. You get ads and promos for your new CD," Ramey said. "The goal is to get a major record label."

Ramey said that bluegrass acts often have a hard time getting picked up by large record labels because of low sales, but the band's songs will be featured on WSM radio, and he hopes the exposure will give them a boost. CDs also will be available at the show.

"The number of CDs we sell will influence their (the record company's) decision," Ramey said.

Other band members include Winchester resident Steve Maynard, Ron Bowling, Ron Cornett, Sherwin Kidd and Dave Henemeier.
