Two off-duty Danville Police officers were called into action Saturday night on their drive home from the fireworks display at the Boyle County Fairgrounds after spotting a hit and run driver who eventually crashed a second time not far from the event.
Prior to police being called to a hit and run accident at the intersection of Perryville Road and Ben Ali Drive around 11:15 Saturday night, Sgt. J.C. Courtright and Det. Robert Ladd had observed a car driving erratically through the intersection of Ben Ali and Citation Drive.
Courtright and Ladd, who were in separate vehicles after leaving the fairgrounds, observed Jeffrey T. Spielman, 37, of Danville driving his vehicle erratically in heavily congested traffic on Ben Ali Drive.
"When we first saw him he came through the stop sign (at Ben Ali and Citation) speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road," Courtright said. "He ran up on the curb and was driving in the grass."
