July 14, 2009

A Crab Orchard man was found dead Saturday in a home with dozens of marijuana plants growing in the backyard, leading police to arrest the man's roommate.

Michael A. Morrissey, 49, of Crab Orchard, was found dead in his home on Turkeytown Road after his girlfriend called police, saying he was unresponsive.

Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger and Deputy Coroner Farris Marcum responded to the scene, and Marcum pronounced Morrissey dead. While police were at the scene, a marijuana plant was spotted growing in the backyard, Folger said.

After searching the rest of the property, police discovered a total of 34 marijuana plants spread throughout the backyard and an area behind the garage.

Folger arrested Morrissey's roommate, Scott Smith, 48, of Crab Orchard, on one charge of cultivating marijuana. On Tuesday afternoon Smith was still lodged in the Lincoln County Regional Jail, in lieu of a $10,000 - 10-percent bond.

Deputy Bill Schnitzler and Trooper Bobby Amon assisted with the investigation.

An autopsy performed Sunday by the state medical examiner's office showed Morrissey died of natural causes, Marcum said today.
