Letter: 'Dry' supporters are naive

July 19, 2009

Dear Editor,

I enjoyed Herb Brock's writing of July 13 concerning the way it was prior to Danville going to the partially "wet" status.

The back and forth between the "wet" forces and the "dry" forces borders on humorous at times. I remember the good old days, when alcohol was totally uncontrolled and available to anyone, regardless of age or status everywhere in our "dry" town. This is not to condone the evil of excessive use of alcohol, or for that matter any substance or actions that harm people.

If the dry forces think they can keep anyone who wants to drink alcohol from doing so they are very naive to the real world.

Think about the situation. Why do politicians, military officers, and yes, ministers, want to be in their positions? It's called control and power. They want to control and tell the general public what they should and should not do. How many times have you heard the expression "lead their flock?" I don't know about other people, but I am not an animal that needs someone to lead me and tell me what I can and cannot do.

Before every minister in town responds to my opinions, I want to say I admire and respect our clergy. It just does not make them correct on all subjects.

What I would do if it were my decision, would be to make alcohol available in every form. Then I would control and tax it to the limits.

This seems to be a good time to congratulate Lancaster on its decision to go wet. Check the license plates that go through the liquor stores and you will see that Boyle Country is a big contributor to their tax base.
