Farmers Market opening day gets a great turnout

July 21, 2009|By Rachel Parsons

When the Clark County Farmers Market opened for the season on Saturday, it was a picturesque scene, at least according to Shiela McCord. McCord is a co-founder of the market and sells vegetables she and her husband grow on their family farm.

"All our vendors were there, and it was just a festive day. The weather was perfect," McCord said.

And there are about 178 people who agree with her. McCord said that was the number of visitors she counted at the McCord booth alone.

"We were constantly busy until almost 1 p.m.," McCord said. "It was fantastic, just a great day."

In addition to local, homegrown vegetables, visitors had the opportunity to sample barbecue from Old Kentucky Barbecue in Lexington and beer cheese from Southwind, named best beer cheese in the county at the Beer Cheese Festival.

Jennifer Howard from the Clark County Cooperative Extension Office set up a booth to discuss healthy eating habits and gave away information packets.

"The crops are doing exceptionally well, and I think we made people aware that didn't even know there was a market down there on Saturdays of what we've got. I've never seen such a crowd down there," McCord said.

Other vendors include Monica Applegate, Craig and Molly Stotts, Sandy Hurst, Tracy Pesina, Jane Green, Gary Karnes, Brian Rose, Nikkie Catzman, John Hendricks and Brian Knowles.

McCord said that organizers hope to have a special event each month during the market season.

"We thought we'd try to get something different each month to get people down there," McCord said.

If the market continues to see the success vendors enjoyed on Saturday, McCord thinks it will be a good season.

"It's (the market) come a long way," McCord said.
