Jessamine County got a voice with funeral directors across the state when Nicholasville's David West was named the central district representative for the Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky.

West, 48, is one of the directors of Betts and West Funeral Home and was nominated by the other six board members to take the position and succeed Billy Shell of Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington.

"It's kind of an honor that my fellow funeral directors thought enough of me to put me in this position," West said. "It's one that I'm going to be proud to serve."

The FDAK sets policies and procedures for the operation of funeral directors and implements training and continuing education. Its members serve one-year, renewable terms.

"It's a board to guide funeral homes in serving and being honorable within the profession," West said.

West said that the opportunity to see the profession on a bigger level will go a long way toward learning more about his industry.

"I will have an ear to a bigger voice, so to speak, and education - learning what trends are," he said. "Maybe better ways to meet the needs of the people that we serve. It might expand my ability to gain knowledge in those areas."

West has been in the funeral home business for 30 years, 25 years as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He has spent his whole career in Nicholasville with Betts and West.
