Cookout to raise cash for local homeless grant

Clark County Community Services will hold a cookout at Fairview Market on East Washington Street from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday to raise money for a $50,000 grant to assist homeless persons in the community.

Community Services must match the $50,000 dollar for dollar by Aug. 1 or lose the grant, and this week the group was about $9,000 short of its goal.

Community Services operates the local "needs center" that provides a variety of relief to the poor as well as programs to help the needy become more self-sufficient.

Earlier this summer, the group held a "sleep out" event at Lykins Park to raise part of the money needed and has been asking churches and other institutions to donate.
