HUSTONVILLE - Jessica Watkins of 242 Brett Circle in Hustonville was rudely awakened the morning of July 17 when lightning struck her home around 6:30 a.m., blowing a hole in the roof of the garage.
Watkins was home alone at the time, and when the house shook, she thought it was a nearby strike. Soon after, she realized it was her home that had been hit.
From the garage of her house, daylight is seen streaming through a hole the size of a dinner plate in the roof, and even more damage was done to the rest of the 4-year-old home. Energy from the strike traveled through the home's plumbing and electrical systems, damaging inside and out. Near water spigots, gutters and flashing, siding and insulation were blown off the house and littered the ground.
Watkins said, "I think we lost our freezer." The total cost of the damage had not been assessed. Watkins said the insurance company instructed her to call back after the plumbers, electricians and siding contractors had paid a visit.
