Letter: Not having doctor's services is stressful

July 29, 2009

Dear Editor,

First, let us say that we appreciate having the services of Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center here in Danville. We both have been patients on several occasions, most recently in the new ICC unit.

It is now July, and we still have major concerns about the ongoing treatment of our physician Dr. Shahzad.

We have been his patients for 10 years and have received exceptional care from him. Not having his services available at EMRMC for the last six months has been very stressful. It is our understanding that Dr. Shahzad has done everything that has been asked of him, but after six months he is still not able to admit patients.

We do not think the situation involves malpractice and believe the state board in Louisville is not conducting any investigation that would result in the revocation of his license. If this situation cannot come before the hospital board again until August, we will have been without his services for eight months.

What could he possibly have done to warrant such treatment? Why are we still denied the services of our doctor at this facility?

I have been told by doctors in the ER that "your doctor doesn't work here anymore." Someone else asked me if I was going with Dr. Shahzad "wherever he was going." Was the outcome to this problem predetermined?

When I walk past the reception desk in Dr. Shahzad's office, I can see the sides of the file cabinets with many, many patient files.

Dr. Shahzad has taken care of a great number of these people for years. We are surprised that more of them have not publicly expressed support for him. We should not and cannot accept his time and care without standing up for him.

EMRMC closed cardiac rehab because it wasn't profitable. Valet parking has met the same fate. Has anyone checked into how much money the hospital has lost by not allowing Dr. Shahzad to admit patients?

With all due respect, we feel this length of time is unjust. Murder trials are completed in less time than this.
