Cardinal golfers open season

The boys golf season is under way.

The George Rogers Clark boys golf team opened play in the two-day Flyer Classic Monday with a 322 and stands in 13th place out of 23 teams heading into today's final round at Juniper Hills Golf Course in Frankfort. The first round was played at Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Brad Martin, who fired 6-over 78. Martin had a 38 on the first nine holes and carded a 40 on the back nine. Martin is 11 shots behind co-leaders leaders Adam Herald (Madison Central) and Dagan Abdon (Greenup County) both of whom opened the tournament with a 5-under 67.

D.J. Pegg followed Martin with a 79, while Ross Todd had an 82. Michael Martin had an 83 and Blake Todd finished with an 88 to round out Clark's scoring.

Overall, 13 players are under par heading into today's final round, including Taylor Combs of Lexington Christian, who had a 68 and stands one shot behind Herald and Abdon. Three players are even.

On the team leaderboard, Madison Central leads with a 287 and has a three-shot advantage over Lexington Christian, which finished with a 290. St. Xavier is in third (292), followed by Henry Clay and Christian Academy of Louisville, each with a 297.

Madison Central had three golfers finished at par or better in the opening round.
