FUNERALS

Daniel McLaurin1908-2009

Daniel Gilmer McLaurin, 100, died July 31, 2009, in Danville, Ky.

Born Aug. 20, 1908, in Canton, Miss., he was the son of the late Daniel Gilmer and Hattie Stewart McLaurin. He was predeceased by two wives, Jane Sanders McLaurin and Elizabeth Nichols Heard McLaurin; and two sisters, Maud McLaurin Welch and Martha McLaurin Matthews.

Mr. McLaurin earned his B.A. from Millsaps College (Jackson, Miss.) where he was student body president, captain of the football team and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and Kappa Sigma. He earned an M.A. at George Peabody College (Nashville, Tenn.), and the University of Alabama. He worked on his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, Columbia University and the University of Southern Mississippi. His teaching career began at Natchez High School followed by the assistant superintendent position.

In 1950, he became superintendent of the Natchez Public Schools and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1977. During his career he oversaw the consolidation of the city and county schools and the integration of the Adams County schools. He served as president of both the Mississippi Association of School Administrators and the Council of Public School Systems in Mississippi. The McLaurin Elementary School in Natchez is named in his honor.

He was a member and elder at First Presbyterian Church in Natchez and a member, past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Natchez Rotary Club. He served on the board of directors of the Natchez Building and Loan Association, the Copiah-Lincoln Junior College, and the Natchez Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah McLaurin Vahlkamp (Charles) of Danville and Mary Jane McLaurin (Michael Arnold) of London, England; two grandchildren, Jane Vahlkamp Andrus (William) of Lexington, and Charles Gustav Vahlkamp Jr. of San Francisco, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Mark Boswell and Daniel Andrus; and six nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Aug. 22, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Natchez. Burial will be in Canton.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Aug. 22, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 405 State Street, Natchez, MS 39120; or the Boyle County Public Library, 307 W. Broadway, Danville, KY 40422.

Clara Johnson

JUNCTION CITY - Clara Louise Johnson, 84, of Danville died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009.

Born June 12, 1925, in Butchertown, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Tom and Annabell Southerland Wilcher. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

The widow of Bryant Johnson, Clara was predeceased by a son, Phillip Johnson.

She is survived by four daughters, Deloris Yates of Stanford, Jean (Donnie) Shearer of Jessamine County, Lorene Campbell of Danville, Diane (Jess) Duvall of Danville; two sons, Jimmy (Penny) Johnson of Stanford and Bryant Herman (Sharon) Johnson of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Phillip (Barbara) Johnson of Polk, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home and Family Center in Junction City with the Rev. Dale Denton officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jimmy Dewayne Johnson, Ray Cochran, Steven Campbell, Bryant Johnson, Mike Johnson, Phillip Allen Johnson, Andrew Yates, David Yates and Wayne Wilson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Talbert Turner, Ricky Turner, Robert Johnson, Donnie Shearer and Jess Duvall.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until time for the service.

Michael L. Chumbley

LIBERTY - Michael Lynn Chumbley, 52, died Monday at his home in Russell Springs.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Chumbley Renfro of Parkers Lake, Ky.; two stepsons, Nicholas Popplewell and Scotty Wright, both of Russell Springs; a grandchild; and three brothers, Paul Chumbley of Liberty, Dallas Ray Chumbley of Florida, and Roy Lee Chumbley of Science Hill.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home by Bro. Clifford DeHart. Burial will be in South Fork Cemetery.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today.

GARRARD

Yoshiko Sebastian1932-2009

LANCASTER - Yoshiko Monobe Sebastian, 77, of Woodland Avenue died Monday.

Born Jan. 18, 1932, in Kyoto, Japan, she was the daughter of the late Kenzo and Namie Iwata Monobe. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Sebastian; a brother, Qohtaro Monobe and two sisters, Toyoko Okamoto and Hideko Ohgami, all of Kyoto, Japan.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ramsey Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

Penelope Lapinski1940-2009

HARRODSBURG - Penny Lapinski, 69, of Harrodsburg, widow of William T. Maltby and Robert Lapinski, died Monday, at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born June 19, 1940, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of Alice Hayes Adams the late Reginald Pellow.

Other survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Lapinski and Kelly Maltby, both of Harrodsburg, and Andrea (Michael) Roll of Rochester Hills, Mich.; a sister, Pam Boegler of Howell, Mich.; and a special friend, Melvin Kendrick of Lexington.
