Rural America needs health care reform

August 06, 2009

Dear Editor,

August -- A time for barbecues, water sports, corn on the cob, and congressional visits. Wait, congressional visits?â?¨That's right! Every year, Congress goes on vacation in August and often spends that time visiting with constituents in their state. But we're not going on vacation because health care reform is not done. And we need you to join us. â?¨While some rural health care issues are gaining traction in Congress, we need YOU to bring the message home that we need health reform that works for all of us - reform that brings us lower costs, more choices, and coverage rural America can count on.â?¨Rural Americans need:

* More affordable health care options to help America's family farmers, entrepreneurs and small businesses overcome the struggle with skyrocketing health insurance costs, including assistance through refundable tax credits for low and middle income Americans who cannot afford insurance without it.

* Loan forgiveness and other incentives to attract and keep doctors, nurses and other medical providers in our rural communities, including programs that train more rural people as medical professionals.

* A system of payments for Medicare and other public plans that fairly compensate rural hospitals and doctors.

* Expanded prevention programs that provide grants and incentives for communities to improve health and fitness.

When you see your senator or representative this August, urge them to pass a bill in September that addresses each of these points above. Now is the most critical time for you to act to ensure that reform works for all of America. â?¨To find out whether your senators or representative are holding a meeting near you, call their district office nearest to you. You can also act by emailing them or writing a letter today.

Happy August!
