Back to School Weekend

FORT BOONESBOROUGH — It won't be long until the kids are back in school, so spend one last summer weekend at Fort Boonesborough, 4375 Boonesborough Road. The campground is hosting a special weekend for kids and their parents full of activities like putt-putt golf, hikes and free tours. SATURDAY

Handbuilt pottery demonstration

BEREA — Ceramic artist Jana John of Louisville will demonstrate clay handbuilding techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center, 975 Walnut Meadow Road. John specializes in functional pieces made from terra cotta clay, including platters, bowls, spoon rests and pins. Throughout the day, John will be creating clay slabs, then cutting out pieces freehand. She is also known for her masks, which often feature cat motifs. VFW Post 2728 Golf Scramble

WINCHESTER — VFW Post 2728 will host a golf scramble at Cassell Creek Golf Course. Golfers will have the opportunity to win prizes, and there will be a barbecue dinner following the scramble. 'Heaven' musical program at Mount Zion

WINCHESTER — More than 50 local musicians will perform a free concert at Mount Zion Christian Church from 3 to 5 p.m. The theme of the concert is "Heaven," and organizer Mary Anne Crane describes it as a "musical celebration of heaven." Performers include the Lawson Brothers Band and Jeff Walson and Kimberly Carter Blair. There will be five sing-along songs for the audience, led by the Singing Seniors from the Generations Center.

Cincinnati Bengals training camp

GEORGETOWN — Kentucky may not have its own professional sports team, but the Cincinnati Bengals are making Kentucky the site for their training camp when they visit Georgetown College. Sports fans can come by and watch the action, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Georgetown College Athletic Complex, 100 Stadium Drive. Practice includes an intrasquad scrimmage and a mock game. Hollywood's Brightest Stars: 'Once Upon a Time in the West'

LEXINGTON — Hollywood's Brightest Stars continues at the Kentucky Theatre, 214 E. Main St., with "Once Upon a Time in the West." This classic western stars Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson and Jason Robards. Shows are at 1:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., and tickets are $4. For more information, call 231-7924. Ice cream social and luau

WINCHESTER — The Generations Center will host an old-fashioned ice cream social, complete with homemade cake, for $3.50 per person, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the center, and the proceeds will go to fund programs for seniors.

Aug. 15

Junior Miss Program

WINCHESTER — The Junior Miss Program gives local girls the chance to show off their academic and athletic abilities while competing for scholarship money. The event is for girls entering their senior year of high school. The winner will have the opportunity to compete for the state title. Participants must present a talent, and will be judged on academic performance. The public is invited to the competition at the George Rogers Clark High School auditorium. Come out and support local girls and watch them perform in Elvis-inspired routines.

Sip and Stroll Wine Tasting

WINCHESTER — After the success of February's Wine About Winter, downtown Winchester will once again host a downtown wine tasting.
