Coach Cal coming to Garrard Chamber event

August 11, 2009|BEN KLEPPINGER

Garrard County residents will have the opportunity to see one of biggest names in Kentucky sports in person Oct. 1.

University of Kentucky Basketball Head Coach John Calipari is scheduled to be a speaker at the Garrard County Chamber of Commerce's annual Farm-City Banquet.

Chamber President Tom Hobbs said a community member with a personal connection to Calipari helped the Chamber land the appearance by Kentucky's new basketball coach.

Since coming to UK from Memphis earlier this year, Calipari has put together what many consider to be the best incoming class of recruits in the nation.

Hobbs said he expects Calipari will probably give attendees a "nice update" about the basketball program. The UK season kicks off just a few weeks after the banquet. The coach also might comment on the value of close-knit communities, he said.

The Chamber is attempting to obtain use of Garrard County High School for the event. Hobbs said he expects the Garrard County Board of Education to approve the plans tonight.

If the high school is used, capacity for the event will be approximately 2,000 to 2,500, he said. A banquet is scheduled for 6-7 p.m., right before the main program. Only about 200 people will be allowed to attend the banquet. The chamber's most generous sponsors will have first dibs on those seats.

Tickets to the main program and Calipari's speech will be $15. Hobbs said he is still working out exactly when Calipari will be arriving in Garrard County and if the coach will be doing anything else in the area before or after the Farm-City Banquet.

More specific information is expected to be released tonight after the Garrard County Board of Education meets.
