Talent show set for Mercer

August 25, 2009

HARRODSBURG — On Sept. 12, area residents will have the chance to hear performances by local talent. They will even get the chance to vote on what they hear.

Mercer County Foundation for Education will host an MC Idol competition beginning at 11 a.m. Sept. 12 in the Mercer County Senior High School auditorium.

Even though the event is called "MC Idol," it's open to more than Mercer County residents, said Becky Holt, executive director for the foundation.

Holt said the event is a chance to showcase local talent, but isn't a "third-grade talent show."

This is the first year for MC Idol, but Holt hopes to make it an annual event.

Adults and children alike will be welcome to participate in the event. There are categories for vocals and instrumentals, groups and individuals.

The winner of each category will receive $50 and a trophy. Second and third place also will get trophies.

There will be eight winners, and those winners will go on to compete for $250 and the title of grand champion, Holt said.

The event is sponsored by the Harrodsburg Dairy Queen.

Holt said that anyone can participate. Entry forms and registration are due on Friday and can be picked up at the Harrodsburg Dairy Queen or printed off the foundation's Web site, www.mercer.k12.ky.us/foundation/index.html.

The fee is $10 for an individual entry and $25 for a group.

Entry forms can be turned in to Holt at the Mercer County Board of Education.

Holt said Monday that she doesn't know how many people will participate but that she has received calls from people who are interested from Lexington and Bowling Green.

There are three confirmed judges for the event, including Goldie Goldsmith, owner of Studio G in Mercer County. Goldsmith said she is judging the event because of her experience with performing arts.

She said that what she likes about the event is the chance for audience participation.

The $5 fee will get the audience member 10 tickets, which can be used to vote for who he thinks is the best in each category. A winner will be chosen by the judges from the top three vote-getters.
