After serving as Stanford's postmaster since 2005, John Dampier assumed the role of Nicholasville postmaster last Thursday, Aug. 20.

Dampier started his postal service career in 1995 as a letter carrier in Lexington after serving in the U.S. Navy. Postal work is in Dampier's blood.

"My grandfather was a postmaster in Mt. Olivet, Ky.," he said. "When I got off active duty, I went and signed up. I worked at Trim Masters and Dixon Associates Pipeline down on the drag strip, and I kind of forgot about the post office until they called me. I heard back in about a year; normally, with civilians, it's three to five years."

Since ending his active duty service in the Navy, Dampier has lived in Nicholasville.

Over the years, Dampier said the delivery methods of the post office hasn't changed much, but the there have been some noticeable changes.

"It's the volume that's changed," he said. "We've dropped probably 10 percent in volume in the last year. Our volume is drying up."

Dampier attributes the 10 percent drop to progress.

"It's the Internet," he said. "A lot of people are paying bills online, and a lot of business mailers are not mailing like they used to; everyone is tightening up."

Dampier took over for Ron Thompson who retired March 30. Dampier has served as interim postmaster since that time.

"It went up for bid and I found out last Thursday that I got it," Dampier said.

Dampier and his wife, Kim, have three children, sons Dillon, 13, and Chandler, 5, and daughter Grayson, 10.
