September 04, 2009

The Clark County Diabetes Coalition met Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. Those in attendance were Dana Ladd, Herschel Anservitz, Cora Heffner, Tiffani Stafford, Carolyn Burtner, Brenda Rice and Carol Hisle.

Cora and Dana have been working on brochures; these have been e-mailed to other members for review.

Brenda Harrington of NAMI e-mailed Hisle and assured her they will be participating with a booth.

The Lions Club will continue to look at concepts and firm up specifics about the walk portion of the event. Brenda Rice has participated in the ADA walk in Lexington and had some suggestions. These included signs at the walk site by sponsors; she also discussed ways to raise funds with the walkers. The Lions will also work on their volunteers for the eye screenings. Contact will again be made with the Winchester Lions Club.

Hisle contacted Dr. Farrer's office to secure assistance and will follow up with them about participation or educational materials.

At one point Sharon Dunn of the homemakers had volunteered some possible homemaker assistance for refreshments. At this time Dunn has not been reachable. Cora Heffner will follow up when she goes to the extension office today about volunteers. Carolyn Burtner volunteered water for the event from Mayor Ed Burtner and herself. She also felt that she may be able to obtain donations for apples and energy bars. If not, Hisle or Carolyn Burtner will speak to the Health Department Director, Scott Lockard, about donating these.

Professor Jean Jackson of BCTC has also volunteered her time and has been in contact with Hisle about participating, possibly with students. She will also get the word out about the walk and health fair at BCTC.

Tiffani Stafford will follow up with nurse/lab volunteers to do blood glucose checks and blood pressure checks. She assured those in attendance there would be no problem getting volunteers. Herschel also voiced that his granddaughter is a nurse and might be available to help.

Hisle has secured the space for the billboard to go up for the event and will continue to work with Lamar and the health department to get that completed.

Carolyn Burtner will set up with other educational materials for the event that day and do the heel screen bone density machine.

Ladd and Anservitz will work on details of the walk and follow up with the group.

Ladd will work on the brochure/posters with Heffner, Brenda Rice and Hisle.

Ladd will also follow up about electronic signs in the community.

Hisle will provide BMI screenings, diabetes screening at the health department diabetes booth, along with other educational materials and counseling that day.

Heffner will distribute to the Chamber, Industrial Authority, school district family resource teachers and principals, and her available resources. She will make contact with the extension office about volunteers as well.

Hisle will contact Bayer again to have the strips and meters available and contact Dr. Farrer's office again.

The next meeting will be Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. Until the next meeting contact may be made through e-mails or phone calls.
