Letter: Wants progressive community back

September 10, 2009

Dear Editor,

I used to be very proud of this community. I felt that we had a very progressive, educated, caring and beautiful community. We have a top notch college and two very good school systems and one of the best hospitals around.

However, at the moment I am ashamed to be a member of the Danville/Boyle County community. This is a community that values a 40-year-old building more than the ability to save a life. That building had been empty and was scheduled for demolition.

How wonderful to have a heliport adjoining the hospital. You can't simply sit a helicopter down on top of a building without very costly structural changes.

Think how many lives may be saved by taking down that one building and what would be gained by saving it. Danville has done a great job maintaining its historical nature, so I don't think it would be detrimental to lose the old Advocate building.

Another reason that makes me ashamed to be a member of this community is the article on the front page of the Sunday paper regarding President Obama's talk with our school children.

If my children were still school age, I would bring them home so that they could hear the president of the United States of America tell them how important their education is, that they work hard and set goals for themselves. What a wonderful thing that the president still takes the time to remember our children, the future citizens of this great country.

I don't know if it is politics, ignorance, personal agendas, or some or all of the aforementioned that have led to these hurtful decisions.

The hospital doesn't need the heliport, people need it to have their lives saved.

The president doesn't have an agenda to pass on to our children other than to let them know how important they are and how important their education is to their future.

I want my community back. One that cares, that gives, that is progressive and is responsible.
