September 12, 2009|By NANCY LEEDY

MOUNT VERNON — Clarke Rowe rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns and John Saylor added 146 yards and two scores to lead Rockcastle County to a 42-14 win over Lincoln County here Friday night in the Renfro Valley Jamboree Bowl.

The Rockets (2-1) hit hard and hit early, opening up a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and went on to rack up 432 yards offense.

The Rocket defense was equally impressive, holding the Patriots to minus-50 yards rushing.

"Rock is a solid team and well-coached, and our kids got to experience that first-hand tonight," said Lincoln coach Mike Settles. "Their kids don't look a whole lot different than ours but they just play so, so hard.

"We knew what we were in for and we didn't come out ready. And, when you go down 21-0 to Rockcastle in the first quarter, it's hard to come up out of that."

Rowe scored on runs of 6, 5 and 60 yards and Saylor scored with runs of 34 and 16 yards. Rocket quarterback Dustin Bishop, who was 3-for-7 for 104 yards, connected with Jamie Todd for a 60-yard touchdown reception early in the third quarter as Rockcastle built a 35-0 lead over the Patriots (1-2).

Lincoln did put up two scores on the Rockets in the third quarter, with Matt Carrier capping off a five-play, 54-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge and Julian Calhoun returning a Rockcastle punt 35 yards to the goal line.

"I'm disappointed with the way we started, but I was proud of the effort they gave in the second half," said Settles. "We played well at times but we still need to play well consistently. We need to be making plays on every play for all four quarters."

Lincoln's offense did manage to finish on the plus side overall, with quarterback Austin Hinds going 8-for-24 passing for 124 yards. The Patriots fumbled the ball four times, losing one, and Hinds was intercepted three times.
