Net Xpress: E-mail, text junkies may love Peek

September 14, 2009|By SHEILA J. CLARK

This week, I'm focusing on a gadget that's been on the market for about a year now. It was picked by several tech spots as last year's top gadget of the year. It's the Peek mobile e-mail device.

The Peek probably is best described as THE ultimate tech toy for any e-mail and texting junkie. The Peek was created to accomplish a single task — mobile text communication.

At first glance, the Peek resembles a smartphone because of its QWERTY keyboard. However, the Peek doesn't come with a ton of bells and whistles. Instead, the Peek operates with a minimalist design including a scroll wheel and a back button on its right side.

The Peek's keyboard is made of rubber and the keys are backlit. The latter is perfect for sending e-mails or texting in dark areas.

Setting up a Peek takes less than five minutes. The interface for the Peek is extremely user friendly. The main screen is your inbox while the press of the scroll wheel serves up a menu of options.

All e-mails come into a single inbox on the Peek. A check for new messages is performed every five to 15 minutes. An indicator will light up and a sound and/or vibration happens when new mail arrives in the Peek inbox.

The Peek e-mail service uses the POP3 protocol. This means the messages you delete won't be deleted from your regular inbox.

The Peek Classic comes in three colors — Black Cherry, Aqua Blue and Charcoal Gray. It enables users to check up to two different e-mail accounts. The Classic provides unlimited mobile e-mail with standard delivery time of two to five minutes and offers support for photo attachments. The Peek Classic costs $19.95 and less.

The Peek Pronto comes only in Charcoal Gray. It features true push e-mail for instant delivery and supports up to five e-mail accounts. It offers unlimited mobile e-mail and texting. The Pronto offers support for PDFs, .doc and .txt files, and various photo format attachments. It costs $59.95.

Peek Classic users can get a free software upgrade to Pronto. However, one caveat enables them to do so. The Peek Classic device must currently run Peek's software version 1.04-1.08. If the Peek Classic already has the 1.09 software, there is a $40 fee to upgrade the device to the Pronto service level.

Three Peek e-mail service plans are available: The monthly plan costs $19.95. Three months of service costs $49.95, a $10 savings per month. Users can get a $40 savings by paying for a full year of service for only $199.95. There are no contracts or hidden fees when using the Peek devices.

Other general features of the Peek devices include a 2.5-inch color display and a battery life of four to five days under typical use. The Peek comes with 8MB of memory and weighs in at only 3.8 ounces. The Peek runs on the nationwide T-Mobile cellphone network and does not require a WiFi connection to operate.

Peek supports most popular e-mail providers including the top four — Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and AOL. They also are compatible with AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, Roadrunner, BellSouth, Earthlink, Charter and others.
