Lincoln County's cross country teams made their presence known at Saturday's E.G. Plummer Invitational in Danville by garnering four Top 10 finishes.

Lincoln's runners were among the nearly 400 high school, middle school and elementary athletes who plodded their way over the hills and into the woods surrounding Admiral Stadium for the annual meet.

Lincoln's top finish overall in the meet belonged to elementary runner Morgan Gourley. Gourley, a sixth-grader who won the event last year, had to settle for second this time around. Wayne County sixth-grader Sadie Martin beat her to the finish in the 1.1-mile race Saturday in 8:04.4. Gourley's time was 8:27.7.

The girls' elementary division was the only race in which Lincoln placed two runners in the Top 10. Following Gourley across for Lincoln was Logan Godbey, who covered the distance in 9:42.8 to place ninth.

A Lincoln runner was in the lead pack for both the girls' and boys' varsity runs, with Alex Bunch and Eric Sanders holding their own with the day's top runners.

Bunch, a freshman at LCHS and the defending E.G. Plummer girls varsity champ, was not able to defend her title, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 20:39.1. Reigning Class 2A state cross country champion Kaitlin Snapp of Danville claimed the top spot in the race with a time of 19:15.5. Snapp was all alone at the finish with second-place runner Emma Ditto of Boyle County not crossing until 20:22.6 showed on the event clock.

Franklin County's Robert Sandlin claimed the boys' varsity win with a time of 16:54.9, almost 27 seconds ahead of second-place running Alex Beckerson of Burgin. Beckerson finished in 17:21.8 to help his Bulldogs to a team win.

The first six varsity runners would all cross before the clock hit 18:00. Sanders, an LCHS senior, finished just under the wire, sprinting up the hill and across the finish line in 17:57.9.

The Lady Patriots just missed a Top 10 finish in the girls middle school run, with Tevin Newcomb crossing in 11th place in a time of 15:08.1.

Lincoln did not put a runner on course in the junior varsity or boys elementary divisions.
