Letter: Honor the Constitution

September 17, 2009

Dear Editor,

I strongly believe in and fully support our federal Constitution — without conditions. It is what has separated this country from all others in the world and made us unique among the family of nations in the world, until recently.

But with the advent of the Bush era, honor and respect for it has simply vanished. Political disrespect for our sacred Constitution is all too common these days, but it doesn't end with political disrespect. Our judicial system is guilty also.

For instance, Article VI states that in all criminal prosecutions the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy trial. In reality, far too often too many accused languish in jail for months and in some cases, even years, without a trial. This is wrong and unconstitutional. Article VIII states that excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. This article is also violated constantly in our judicial system.

Today, many accused are thrown in jail with no bail at all set. Or it is set so high that the accused cannot make it and is forced to remain in jail. Fines are imposed that are unreasonable, and are certainly excessive. No cruel and unusual punishments are to be inflicted? What is more cruel and unusual than to deprive someone of his life?

Constitutional violations are constant in this country today, and we have fallen apart as a nation because of it. We are free falling into the point of no return. We have destroyed the original beliefs that made us great. We have destroyed the America that the world once loved and respected. We have no one to blame but ourselves.
