Raymond Nunn

1919-2009

CRAB ORCHARD — Raymond Nunn, 90, husband of Virginia P. Nunn and father of Frankie Lee Nunn, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 14, 1919, in the Kettle Island Community in Bell County. He was the son of the late William and Alice V. Coldiron Nunn. He and his family moved to Lincoln County in 1930 and began farming.

He farmed until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 1, 1942, and served during World War II. He attained the rank of staff sergeant during the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He received a Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with two bronze service stars. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He was discharged from the Army on March 24, 1947.

He was a member of Watts Chapel Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Other memberships include the National Rural Letter Carriers Association (he was a mail carrier for 24 years for the U.S. Postal Service), the Disabled American Veterans and the 14th Armored Division Association. He also was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia P. Nunn; a son, Frankie Lee Nunn of Danville; and a stepson, Jimmy Parsons of Lexington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Reynolds Nunn in January 1960; a stepson, Kenneth A. Parsons; six half-brothers, Fred and Charles (Chas) Nunn, and Matt, Hugh, Milton and Henry LeFevers; and four half sisters, Mary LeFevers, and Ida Mae, Mattie and Lena Mae Nunn.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Watts Chapel Baptist Church with Bro. Ralph Baker officiating. Burial will be in Piney Grove Cemetery at Brodhead.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at McKnight Funeral Home and after 11 a.m. Monday at Watts Chapel Baptist Church.

Pallbearers are Jimmy Parson, Dick LeFevers, Bobby Turpin, Paul Barrett, Billy Gilbert, Lonnie Pruitt and Matt Hoskins.

Honorary pallbearers are the Watts Chapel Mens Sunday School Class.

Memorial contributions can be made to Watts Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund or Gideons International Bible Fund.
