Net Xpress: New Moblin-based OS released

September 28, 2009|By SHEILA J. CLARK

Canonical has created a brand new Linux distro called Ubuntu Moblin Remix. Canonical is best known for its popular family of Linux distros, which include Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

In creating the Ubuntu Moblin Remix, Canonical combined the internals of its Ubuntu Linux 9.04 operating system with the core interface, libraries and applications of Moblin Version 2.0.

Moblin is an open source project hosted by the Linux Foundation and created by Intel. The project's goal is to build a Linux-based platform optimized for mobile devices such as netbooks and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The OS was optimized for the Intel Atom processor platform.

The Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition specifically was developed for and is pre-installed on a Dell Inspiron Mini 10v. The netbook already has been made available for purchase online from Dell at www.dell.com/ubuntu. The Ubuntu Moblin Remix installation image can be downloaded from the Moblin wiki page at http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Moblin.

Tips for your iPhone/iPod

Here is a tip for taking a screenshot on your iPhone or iPod. First of all, you need to have at least firmware 2.0 or newer. Hold down the Home button at bottom and then press Power/Wake button then release both buttons. The screen will flash white as it captures the screenshot of your entire screen. The screenshot is then saved as a photo on your device. You can find your screenshot by first tapping on Photos. On an iPhone, the screenshot is saved in Camera Roll. On an iPod touch, the screenshot is saved in Saved Photos.
