Prep Football round-up: Garrard moving forward

September 30, 2009|By MIKE MARSEE

After seeing his Garrard County team take a significant step forward, Mark Scenters wants to make sure they keep going in the right direction.

The Golden Lions' coach said it's imperative that they don't stub their toe Friday against Jackson County, but instead build on the momentum generated by their narrow win over Wayne County last week.

"If we get beat by Jackson County on Friday, then the work we put into the win (over) Wayne County would be meaningless. I believe our team will be focused to get the job done on Friday night," Scenters said.

Garrard's last four games have been decided by seven points or less, and the Lions (2-3, 1-0 Class AAA, District 5) improved to 2-2 in those games with the win over Wayne, which wasn't secured until a Wayne player fell on his way to the end zone with 12 seconds remaining.

"One thing about this team is we have been tested. We know what it feels like to lose a couple close ones that we feel we should have won, and what it feels like to pull out a win in a couple close games where we had to gut it out," Scenters said. "Tough situations build character, and I believe that we are starting to see some of that becoming evident in our team."

All the indicators say this game might not be so close. Garrard has outscored Jackson 121-16 in their two previous meetings in 2007 and '08. This year's Generals are winless and have been held to eight points or less in four of their five games, and their roster lists only 25 players.

Jackson (0-5, 0-1) is in its fourth varsity season and already on its third coach, but Scenters said the Generals are making progress under Arthur Carter, a former Bell County assistant under Dudley Hilton who brought a couple of other young assistants with him from Bell.

Wayne County (0-5, 0-1) at Casey County (2-4, 0-1)

Trying to keep Wayne from getting its first win could be a tough assignment for Casey, which is still smarting from a 51-point loss to Somerset last week.

The Rebels matched Somerset's first touchdown last week, with a 72-yard scoring pass from Will Hatter to Casey Cochran, then allowed only 9 yards over three possessions before giving up 29 straight points over the final 6 minutes of the first half.

Wayne has allowed 32.6 points per game, while Casey has allowed 39.5 per game.
