Cross Country: Clark sweeps meet

The George Rogers Clark cross country teams took first -place honors in an eight-team meet at Wolfe County Tuesday night.

Alex White placed first in the meet with a time of 19:29.30. Following White was Brandon Bailey, who placed third with a 19:46.70. Colton Lewis was Clark's third runner with a 20:33.5. William Pope and Amos Gapp were Clark's fifth and sixth finishers, completing the distance in 21:14.40 and 21:29.30, respectively. Clay Dixon placed eighth overall with a 22:05.50.

"Wolfe County is a tough course," Clark coach Dodd Dixon said. "You can add two to three minutes to your time when you run at Wolfe. To place all of our guys in the Top 10 was great."

In boys team standings, Clark finished with a 21. Powell County was second (55), followed by Menifee County (78). Wolfe County was fourth (101) and Morgan County was fifth (111). Perry Central, Breathitt Co. and Lee Co. tied for sixth.

"Everybody ran a good race for an entirely tough course," Lewis said.

In the girls competition, Tiffany Toler placed first overall with a time of 22:19.70 as Clark claimed the top three spots in the race.

Toler was followed by teammate Lindy Darnell, who ran the course in 24:07.00. Taylor Welch placed third with a 25:06.50. Brooke Moree of Powell County was fourth and Clark's Genna Petrey was fifth with a finish of 26:02.80. Lilly Shear was Clark's fifth finisher in the race.

"You think the hill is going to be OK, but then you turn a corner and it is twice as steep," Petrey said of the course.

In the girls standings, the Lady Cards were first with a (26), Morgan County was second at 40 points, followed by Powell County in third with 72 points. Perry Central placed fourth with a 113. Menifee County, Wolfe County, Lee County and Breathitt County tied for fifth place.

In middle school competition St. Agatha defeated Clark Middle in both the boys and girls competition. Conkwright did not compete in the meet, but traveled to Lexington to run in the Area 6 championships. The Conkwright girls team placed fifth and the boys team was sixth.
